Parents often worry about how their children are adjusting to new situations. When the parents are going through a divorce, there are many different things that the child might struggle with. One of these is the emotional toll that the major life change takes on them.

A child who’s suffering emotionally during their parents’ divorce may have trouble sleeping. Around 20 to 30% of children who are school-aged have problems with their sleep habits. In many cases, anxiety is the cause of their sleep difficulties.

How can parents help encourage healthy sleep patterns?

Parents need to help their children to learn how to express their emotions in a healthy manner. When they know that they have an outlet for their emotions, they can feel more comfortable with their feelings. This can help them to sleep better.

Creating a bedtime routine can also help encourage good sleep patterns. As part of that routine, you can set aside time for them to discuss their day and anything that’s bothering them. Having a bedtime routine can also help them to sleep better because their body and mind respond to the subtle cues that it’s time to sleep.

Your children need to know that they have a stable family life, even if it’s spread across two homes. Taking the time to get your parenting plan in order is important so that you can help your child to adjust to the new way of doing things. This plan should reflect the child’s needs and what’s in their best interest. Working with someone who can come up with solutions for the issues at hand is important so you can have everything in order.
