Divorce and views on money

On Behalf of | Oct 19, 2022 | Divorce |

Money is often cited as a reason for divorce. In many instances, this means that a couple simply can’t earn enough money to make ends meet, and this creates endless stress that causes the relationship to deteriorate. This is why losing your job increases the odds that you will get a divorce.

But it’s not just a lack of money that contributes to this financial stress. Very well-off individuals can still disagree about how they want to use money, and this can create some significant stress, as well. It may even lead to a divorce if they can’t decide how to compromise or cooperate.

Spending and saving

One way that this happens is when one person is a spender and the other is a saver. The spender likely wants to have experiences and enjoy life in every way that they can, and they don’t mind spending money to do it. In their view, this isn’t frivolous. It’s the entire reason they worked so hard to earn that money.

However, the saver views money as a way to create a sense of financial stability and security in their life. They’re not happy having these experiences, and they are not enjoying life. They are just stressed out because they feel like their partner is spending the money that they need to have a safe and secure life. In their view, this spending is frivolous and can be destructive.

Both of these views on money can be functional and correct in their own right. But two people who have conflicting views may not be able to stay in a marriage. If you do decide to get divorced for financial reasons, be sure you know what legal steps to take.
